I awoke this morning to the sound of steel drums and roosters crowing…..a true Caribbean experience. Honestly, I’m loving sitting here on the balcony enjoying the dawn and the sounds of the hard core revellers not so far away. Johnny sleeps 🙂
New Year’s Eve was a lovely meal at the hotel with the staff even more excited than the guests. Everyone adorned with party hats, sounds makers and the excitement one feels when yet another year draws to a close with a new one rolling in just behind. Our favourite server Andrea (An DRAY ahh) had Johnny to a photo of the me with her and then did a selfie with the 3 of us….we sat next to a lovely Dutch couple and chatted, ate, sipped wine and listened to a guitarist for hours. Finally, we went for a walk on the beach where all the partiers were gathering for music and eventual fire works.
YOU KNOW US….we really aren’t the group party kind of people,, so we headed back to the room (it was 10:30 ish), watched the rest of a movie and actually were awake with the TV off and lights out when the fire works started…they sounded great 🙂
So here I am in 2017. We have been so sluggish the past week we spent the last day of 2016 walking….to a mall a couple of km away….stopped for a snack and pineapple juice on the beach on the way home….grabbed our suits, had lunch then spent the rest of the afternoon on the beach….went swimming (forgot to take my readers off my head and they are now just another piece of plastic in the sea)…..went back to room, changed and wandered up to the village like area a few blocks away and picked up a few needed items……over 20,000 steps on my Fitbit for the last day of 2017…not bad!
No photos….the music is still playing……the roosters still crowing……Welcome to 2017! Happy New Year!!! xo Johnny (asleep) & Melva (not) – 6:44 a.m. January 1, 2017.
As always we were uber organised, packed and ready to go in enough time the night before to head off to the cinema! AVX/3D Version of the new Star Wars – Rogue One! It was terrific. I was feeling a bit under the weather though (cold coming on)….so instead of our 4k walk to the theatre we took a bus. We did walk home though & stopped at a pub on Elgin for dinner on the way.
OK….December 24th seems SO long ago…..6 sleeps since then. Essentially, we arrived in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic around 1 pm……got our room immediately. Hopped into our bathing attire and headed for the beach! In Dominican Republic Christmas Eve is a family occasion and the hotel had a special dinner with a guitar player and a surprise visit by Sana Claus…..
We are staying at the Whala Bavaro….it’s a 3 star hotel not quite on the beach, but has a beach area. Honestly, the distance to the beach is less than it is in most big hotels. Now, you may know that Johnny and I are NOT fancy travellers. We prefer smaller hotels, we don’t need all of the amenities and aren’t squeamish if things are less than perfect. So, the Whala fits the bill. However, what is important to us is that it is very well located on Bavaro Beach and beautiful easy walking beach that is miles and miles and miles long! It’s perfect! It is on the Atlantic (vs the Caribbean) side of DR and the water isn’t as clear as there is lots of wind and waves, so lots of sandy rolling in with the waves…all good though!
Johnny is up….time for me to close this baby up, I will come back to it a bit later…
